Training Scenario #2:
Own-Vessel Emergencies
Tasks:

Chart a course to public dock on Denman Island

Before leaving have all crew familiarize themselves with the equipment in the forward lockers

While on the way to Denman Island bring RPM to 4000. Just past the end of the spit make a loud noise and call out “Hit a log”
-
Go through all the procedures to make sure vessel is seaworthy
-
Discover water ingress in battery compartment. A weld broke. What is available to stem the flow of water. Are bilge pumps working? How do you know?

Deploy tarp. Coxswain makes sure you have situational awareness. You are near the spit. Discuss results and repeat scenario with new crew

While checking the broken weld a crew member has lacerated their hand

Deal with the First Aid, boat and proximity to land

Continue at speed to P42. There you will have just run over 30’ of blue poly left. The line wrapped around both props and the engines stall. You are drifting to the rocks, what is the best course of action?

Return to base and review
Conditions:

Day or night, light to moderate seas (heavy seas should be avoided)
Standards:
- Effective crew communications will determine success*

Crew takes time for a SAP

Tasks are appropriately prioritized*

All should understand location and how to use all available emergency equipment*

Special Requirements:
- Crew may elect to arrive early to conduct mission planning
- Coxswain may vary emergencies as along as they fit into “own vessel” category

- Reading : Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 (anchoring)
- Practice First Aid kit
